New and Gently Used School Supplies Collection

Did you know that some teachers spend hundreds of dollars every year to help stock extra supplies for their classrooms and students in need? At the same time, usable supplies sit, unused, or forgotten at home or workplaces.

Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling have set up the School Supply Collection and Reuse Project to make sure usable materials don't go to waste. After you clean out those craft bins, basements, closets and offices, bring your donations of usable school supplies to the Information tent at the Hillsboro Saturday Market any Saturday through the end of October.

Your donations will help educators and students in Washington County.

What's Cooking?

Chef Roopali Lokhande of PuranPoli will be our guest chef this Sunday. She will be demonstrating how to make Corn Fritters. It should be fun and exciting.

About Roopali:

I run a small business from my home kitchen called “Puranpoli,” named after a traditional Indian sweetbread. This sweet symbolizes love and care because it’s a labor-intensive dish made for special occasions.

As for my background, I’m a mother of two young kids, aged 7 and 4. I moved to the U.S. on a dependent visa with my loving husband. After years of not having a work visa, I finally got one just before the pandemic hit. I chose to start this small business to spend more time with my kids while doing something I love.

Business Introduction: PuranPoli is a heartfelt venture by a devoted mom of two, operating from a home kitchen licensed by the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Our specialty, PuranPoli, is a beloved traditional sweet dish originating from the western region of Maharashtra, cherished across India for its delightful taste. In addition to PuranPoli, we offer a range of meticulously crafted products, including homemade spice blends and packaged snacks, all prepared with care and attention to quality. We take pride in sourcing our raw materials from local vendors, ensuring freshness and supporting our community. We're delighted to offer this authentic delicacy, a taste of home that's often hard to come by elsewhere.

Chef Jeni Presnell from Food For Thought Farm will be our guest chef this Saturday. She will demonstrating how to make a scrumptious Garden Marinara. Come and find out how to use your bounty.

About Jeni:

My farm, Food For Thought Farm, is a local Certified Naturally Grown Farm growing veggies on less than 3/4 acre. We also have 170 laying hens, mobile and on pasture. We use all organic practices and never spray. I have been growing veggies for about a decade, but farming for only 4 years. I take great pride in quality, year round growing, and community. I am always working toward regenerative practices. We have been coming to the HFM for two seasons. We also have a small CSA and online retail sales with pick up locations in Beaverton, Newberg, and Hillsboro. Looking forward to more seasons at this community focused market.

Music at the Market

Russ Doiron

Russ Doiron (AKA The Indoor Roamer) has been playing guitar for the past 28 years, some of those times he has taught lessons, and other times he has sang and performed. His instrument of choice is his uncle’s 12-string Guild guitar, which he uses to play an eclectic mix of covers, mixed with some of his own original songs. His favorite styles to play as of late are 90s-2000s pop, folk, yacht rock, and a blend of whatever else catches his ear.
